…Unveils Skill-Up Programme

In a bid to nurture a generation of self-reliant youths and reduce the rate of unemployment, the Oro Students’ Union Worldwide, on Saturday, 2nd August, 2025 held the maiden edition of its Career Fair Symposium at Mary Hanney Secondary School, Oron.
Delivering his address at the two in one event, the President of Oro Students' Union Worldwide, Comrade Anthony Eyoh thanked the students for attending the event as well as indicating interest to learn the skills. He expressed profound appreciations to sponsors and facilitators who have agreed to teach the students various skills. The Chairman of the Occasion, Engr Bobby Onofiok, represented by Dr Sunday Odokwo, reiterated the important of skills, commending the Union for organizing such a timely and impactful initiative focused on youth empowerment.
In his keynote address, Mr. Eugenio Antai, a lecturer at the Maritime Academy of Nigeria, emphasized the need to merge formal education with digital literacy and skills training to remain competitive in today’s fast-evolving world. He encouraged participants to embrace innovation and adaptability as they prepare for the future.
Career development talks featured Comrade Asukwo Robert on Rising in the Banking Sector, highlighting mentorship and personal integrity, and Engr Williams Ante, who spoke on Thriving in the Oil and Gas Industry, stressing the value of technical expertise, certifications, and persistence.
A lively panel session followed, featuring Francis Oyokunyi, Creative Lead at 751 Studio and photography trainer; Engr. Victor Mfon, President of the Young Engineers Forum (Oron Branch); and JCIN Ambassador Akon Uno, Environmentalist and Founder of Build the Woman Initiative. The panelists shared personal journeys, career tips, and encouraged participants to align passion with purpose and take ownership of their growth.
The highlight of the day was the unveiling of the Skill-Up Programme, set to run from August 4th to 31st, 2025, across various locations in Oron Local Government Area. Participants will receive training in solar installation/Maintenance, photography, graphic design, Microsoft Office, cosmetology, Make up, Fashion designing and Electrical.

NEWS: FLOOD RAVAGES MAIDUGURI COMMUNITIES AFTER 3-HOURS DOWNPOUR

News: Flood ravages Maiduguri communities after 3-hour downpour Some part of Maiduguri, the capital city of Borno on Wednesday submerged after a heavy downpour that lasted for more than three hours, leaving many families homeless. The situation has already crippled vehicular movement in many areas due to floodings. A News Agency of Nigeria correspondent who went round the metropolis reports that worst hit areas include Moro-Moro, Damboa Road, Customs, Bulumkutu, Dubai along Maimalari Barracks, and Pompomari By-pass. NAN report that the residents were seen struggling to salvage their belongings as floodwaters took over the streets and flowed into houses, leaving behind scenes of destruction. “We did not expect anything like this,” said Ibrahim Goni, a resident of Moro-Moro. “Our drainage systems are completely blocked, and water from the roads just flowed straight into our homes. LAGOS GOVT URGES RESIDENTS IN LEKKI, IKORODU, OTHERS TO RELOCATE AS HEAVY RAINS PERSIST

The Lagos State Government has urged residents in flood-prone communities across parts of Lekki, Ikorodu, and Ajegunle to relocate to safer, elevated areas, warning that the state is at high risk of flooding due to continued heavy rainfall. Speaking on Politics Today, a Channels Television programme, Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, said residents in low-lying areas such as Ajegunle (Ajilete axis), Majidun in Ikorodu, and some parts of the Lekki corridor must move immediately to avoid disaster. “Epe, Mushin, and Ikeja are safe,” Wahab clarified, but warned residents in Isheri (OPIC axis) to also stay alert, noting that Lagos, being a coastal city, remains highly vulnerable to the effects of climate change. He revealed that predictions from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) indicate that Lagos will receive significantly more rainfall this year compared to 2024.
