Nigerian Professors Demand That Their Monthly Salaries Be Increased To At Least ₦2.5 million

University Professors Demand N2.5M Salary

Some Nigerian professors have demanded that their monthly salaries be increased to at least ₦2.5 million, arguing that their current pay is unsustainable.

The protests, led by members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), highlight frustration over the Federal Government’s failure to implement the renegotiated 2009 FGN–ASUU agreement. Currently, professors earn between ₦525,010 and ₦633,333, while graduate assistants receive as little as ₦125,000 monthly.

Prof. Remi Aiyede of the University of Ibadan said Nigerian professors are among the most underpaid in Africa despite a government-commissioned report recommending higher pay.

He stated, “If you want to benchmark it across countries, you will see that the monthly pay of an average professor across Africa is between $2,000 and $4,000. In fact, a million naira is conservative. Professors in Nigeria should not earn less than ₦2.5m monthly.”

At the University of Lagos, Prof. Abigail Ndizika-Ogwezzy stressed that poor remuneration affects both productivity and wellbeing. “Anything less than ₦2.5m for a professor at the bar is not it. Look at the reality—rent, feeding, school fees, healthcare. We are carrying the burden of three, four, five people. Many lecturers cannot pay their children’s school fees,” she said.

Prof. Sheriffdeen Tela of Babcock University added that the gap between professors and politicians was indefensible. “Even if a professor earns ₦1.2m a month, it’s still less than what a legislator takes home in one month. Many professors live on loans because their salaries are not enough,” he lamented.

Former ASUU President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, also backed the demand, saying professors should earn between ₦1m and ₦5m monthly.

“If Nigeria truly values education and wants its universities to compete globally, professors must be paid what they are worth. Anything short of this will only worsen the brain drain,” he warned.
