  President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday said the cancellation of Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day military parade gave him the rare chance to rest well and enjoy a good breakfast. The Federal Government had earlier announced the cancellation of the October 1 parade, saying it did not diminish the significance of the anniversary. The notice was issued by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation. Speaking at the unveiling of the renovated Wole Soyinka Centre for Culture and Creative Arts in Lagos, Tinubu said the evening event provided a refreshing break from the usual independence-day parade. “Happy 65th Independence Anniversary. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has said he is ready to drop his 2027 presidential ambition if a younger, vibrant and widely accepted candidate emerges under the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Atiku, a key member of the opposition coalition, made this known in an interview with BBC Hausa Service on Wednesday. He stressed that his interest in the race is not driven by personal ambition but by the need to provide Nigerians with a credible alternative. “My being in the 2027 race does not prevent anyone from contesting. If a vibrant and widely accepted younger candidate emerges, I am willing to step aside,” Atiku said. He dismissed suggestions that he is desperate for the presidency, saying his concern is to “rescue Nigeria from those who have held it hostage.” Atiku also urged young Nigerians to take politics seriously, assuring that he would give his full backing if a younger candidate is chosen to represent the coalition.   The Osun State Government has banned graduation ceremonies for nursery and kindergarten pupils in both public and private schools. The directive, issued in a circular dated September 19, 2025, and signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, M. A. K. Jimoh, cited concerns over financial pressure on parents and loss of academic time. “It has come to the attention of the Ministry of Education that elaborate graduation ceremonies for Nursery and Kindergarten pupils have become increasingly common,” the circular noted, adding that the events commercialise early childhood education and burden families unnecessarily. Going forward, graduation ceremonies will only be allowed for pupils completing Primary 6 and students finishing Senior Secondary School 3. The ministry also released new rules on textbook use in both public and private schools, including faith-based institutions.
